Nod y gweithgaredd hwn yw esbonio sut i ddefnyddio AI mewn ffordd gyfrifol ac effeithiol.
Cliciwch ar bob pennawd i ddysgu mwy.
Mae Deallusrwydd Artiffisial (AI) yn cyfeirio at systemau cyfrifiadurol sy'n gallu dysgu o ddata a defnyddio'r dysgu hwnnw i wneud penderfyniadau, i ragweld neu i ddosbarthu. Yn hytrach na dilyn cyfres sefydlog o gyfarwyddiadau, mae systemau AI yn chwilio am batrymau ac yn addasu eu hymddygiad ar sail yr hyn maen nhw wedi'i weld o'r blaen.
Rydych chi'n defnyddio AI bob dydd eisoes, yn aml heb sylwi. Mae enghreifftiau'n cynnwys:
Dydy'r systemau hyn ddim yn "meddwl" fel bodau dynol - maen nhw'n defnyddio cyfansymiau mawr o ddata i ddyfalu mewn ffordd synhwyrol.
Mae hefyd yn bwysig cofio bod AI yn faes eang. Dim ond un math o AI yw sgwrsfotiaid fel ChatGPT. Mae llawer o systemau AI nad ydyn nhw'n cynhyrchu testun o gwbl; maen nhw'n dosbarthu delweddau, yn canfod twyll, yn cyfieithu ieithoedd neu'n helpu meddygon i ddadansoddi sganiau.
Rhaglenni yw Modelau Iaith Mawr sydd wedi'u cynllunio i ddynwared iaith ddynol fel eu bod nhw'n gallu rhyngweithio â phobl mewn ffordd sgyrsiol a naturiol. Maen nhw'n esblygiad o sgwrsfotiaid cynharach, ac wedi arwain at systemau fel ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude a Grok.
Mae Modelau Iaith Mawr yn gweithio drwy ddadansoddi patrymau mewn cyfansymiau enfawr o destun. Yn ystod y broses hyfforddi, mae biliynau o enghreifftiau o frawddegau, sgyrsiau, erthyglau a llyfrau yn cael eu dangos iddyn nhw - y rhan fwyaf o'r deunydd wedi'i gasglu ar-lein. O hynny, maen nhw'n dysgu patrymau ystadegol: pa eiriau sy'n tueddu i ymddangos gyda'i gilydd, sut mae brawddegau yn cael eu strwythuro a sut mae syniadau'n cael eu mynegi fel arfer.
Dylid nodi nad yw Modelau Iaith Mawr yn storio'r ffynonellau hyfforddi hyn, ond eu bod nhw'n dysgu patrymau oddi wrthyn nhw.
Mae Modelau Iaith Mawr modern yn defnyddio math o rwydwaith niwral o'r enw mecanwaith 'Transformer', sy'n caniatáu iddyn nhw brosesu testun mewn ffordd effeithlon a chynhyrchu ymatebion sy'n teimlo'n rhesymegol ac yn ymwybodol o gyd-destun.
Gan nad yw Modelau Iaith Mawr yn deall ystyr, maen nhw'n gallu cynhyrchu atebion sy'n swnio'n gredadwy ond sydd er hynny'n anghywir.
Mae'n bwysig nodi nad yw Modelau Iaith Mawr yn "deall" iaith yn yr un modd â bodau dynol. Does ganddyn nhw ddim credoau, barn nac ymwybyddiaeth - y cyfan maen nhw'n ei wneud, yn syml iawn, yw rhagweld y gair nesaf mwyaf tebygol ar sail y patrymau maen nhw wedi'u dysgu.
Maen nhw'n gweithio fel chwarae gêm ddiddiwedd o ddyfalu'r gair nesaf ar sail popeth maen nhw wedi'i weld o'r blaen.
Un pryder ynghlwm wrth ddefnyddio AI ar gyfer gwaith ysgol yw'r demtasiwn i adael i dechnoleg wneud y gwaith meddwl ar eich rhan chi. Os ydych chi'n dibynnu ar AI i ysgrifennu eich traethodau, datrys eich problemau neu esbonio pob syniad, rydych chi'n colli allan ar ymarfer y sgiliau hynny sydd angen i chi eu datblygu - fel strwythuro dadleuon, dadansoddi gwybodaeth neu ddysgu datrys cwestiynau anodd eich hun.
Dros amser, mae hynny'n gallu ei gwneud hi'n anoddach dysgu'n annibynnol. Efallai y byddwch chi'n cael yr ateb cywir ar y pryd, ond rydych chi'n colli'r cyfle i feithrin hyder yn eich galluoedd eich hun.
Mae AI yn gallu bod yn gymorth defnyddiol, ond mae'n bwysig nad yw'n disodli'r broses o ddysgu. Y nod yw ei ddefnyddio i'ch helpu chi i feddwl, nid i feddwl yn eich lle chi.
Gadewch i ni edrych ar rai opsiynau o ran sut i ddefnyddio Modelau Iaith Mawr i gynorthwyo gydag aseiniad gwaith cartref.

Mae effaith ar yr hinsawdd yn bryder mawr i ddefnyddwyr a datblygwyr. Wrth i bobl ddod yn fwy ymwybodol o'u hôl troed carbon a'u defnydd o ddŵr, mae cwestiynau yn codi am gost amgylcheddol rhedeg systemau AI mawr.
Rydyn ni wedi treulio peth amser yn ceisio dod o hyd i ffigurau dibynadwy ar gyfer allyriadau CO2 a'r defnydd o ddŵr sy'n gysylltiedig ag AI. Mae sawl amcangyfrif gwahanol ar gael, ac maen nhw'n amrywio'n fawr yn dibynnu ar y ffynhonnell, y model a'r rhagdybiaethau sydd ar waith. Mae hyn yn ei gwneud hi'n anodd gwybod pa ffigurau sy'n ddibynadwy.
Mae ChatGPT a'i Brif Swyddog Gweithredol, Sam Altman, wedi cyhoeddi ffigurau ar gyfer eu system nhw, ac rydyn ni wedi dewis defnyddio'r rhain. Er bod y gwerthoedd hyn yn debygol o fod yn geidwadol ac yn gwneud yn fach o'r gost amgylcheddol, maen nhw'n dal i'n galluogi ni i ddeall graddfa'r effaith. Hyd yn oed gydag amcangyfrifon sydd ar yr ochr isaf, mae'r canlyniadau'n drawiadol.
Ar sail data sydd wedi'i gyhoeddi, mae allyriadau CO2 dyddiol ChatGPT oddeutu 255,000 cilogram. Byddai angen mwy na phedair miliwn o goed i wrthbwyso hyn. Mae'r system hefyd yn defnyddio tua 241,320 litr o ddŵr y dydd.
Mae'r cyfrifiadau hyn yn defnyddio gwerthoedd cyfartalog. Mae'r union gost amgylcheddol yn dibynnu ar gymhlethdod ceisiadau defnyddwyr: mae ymholiadau testun byr yn defnyddio llai o ynni a dŵr, tra bod tasgau fel cynhyrchu delweddau yn gofyn am lawer mwy.
Dim ond adlewyrchu costau rhedeg dyddiol model sydd wedi'i hyfforddi'n barod y mae'r ffigurau hyn. Dydyn nhw ddim yn cynnwys effaith amgylcheddol datblygu'r system yn y lle cyntaf. Mae hyfforddi model AI mawr yn gofyn am bŵer cyfrifiadurol ar raddfa enfawr, sy'n golygu llawer mwy o ddefnydd o ynni, mwy o ddefnydd o ddŵr a gofynion caledwedd sylweddol. Mae'r cam datblygu fel arfer yn cael effaith llawer mwy dwys ar yr hinsawdd na defnyddio'r system o ddydd i ddydd, ond gan nad yw cwmnïau yn cyhoeddi data hyfforddi llawn yn aml, mae'n anodd mesur y gwir gost.
Mae angen cydnabod hefyd bod y data sy'n cael ei ddefnyddio yn y sesiwn hon yn benodol iawn o ran amser (2025/26), ond y gobaith yw y bydd costau o'r fath yn gostwng dros amser wrth i'r dechnoleg esblygu.
Bob tro y byddwch chi'n defnyddio sgwrsfot AI, rydych chi'n cysylltu ag adeilad llawn cyfrifiaduron pwerus sydd ar waith 24/7. Mae hynny'n defnyddio ynni a dŵr, yn union fel ffrydio fideos neu chwarae gemau ar-lein. Mae gwybod hyn yn eich helpu i benderfynu pryd mae hi'n werth defnyddio AI - a phryd mae'n well mynd i'r afael â rhywbeth o'ch pen a'ch pastwn eich hun.
Mae systemau AI yn gallu bod yn ddefnyddiol, ond mae'n bwysig deall y risgiau sydd ynghlwm wrthyn nhw hefyd. Dydy'r pryderon hyn ddim yn golygu y dylech chi osgoi AI yn llwyr - dim ond bod angen i chi ei ddefnyddio'n bwyllog.
Mae cynhyrchu newyddion, delweddau a fideo ffug wedi dod yn fwy cyffredin, gyda'r systemau hyn yn gallu eu cynhyrchu i unrhyw un. Effaith gyffredinol hynny yw nad ydyn ni'n gallu gwir gredu unrhyw beth rydyn ni'n ei ddarllen, ei weld neu ei glywed ar-lein.
Mae'r defnydd enfawr hwn o 'rwtsh AI' wedi llenwi platfformau cyfryngau cymdeithasol gyda waliau cynnwys yn llawn negeseuon ffuglennol/ffug - sy'n annifyr ac yn gamarweiniol.
Mae rhai adnoddau AI yn storio'r ceisiadau rydych chi'n teipio ynddyn nhw. Yn dibynnu ar y platfform, gallai'r wybodaeth honno gael ei defnyddio naill ai i wella'r model neu i gael ei hadolygu gan bobl. Mae'n bwysig peidio รข rhannu gwybodaeth bersonol, sensitif neu wybodaeth a fyddai'n galluogi eraill i'ch adnabod gydag unrhyw system AI.
Weithiau, mae modelau AI yn gallu cynhyrchu deunydd niweidiol, sarhaus neu amhriodol, hyd yn oed heb i chi ofyn am hynny. Mae cwmnïau'n defnyddio hidlwyr i leihau hyn, ond dydyn nhw ddim yn berffaith.
Mae Modelau Iaith Mawr yn gallu cynhyrchu atebion sy'n swnio'n gredadwy ond sy'n hollol anghywir. Dydyn nhw ddim yn "gwybod" ffeithiau - rhagweld testun yn seiliedig ar batrymau maen nhw.
Pan fydd defnyddiwr yn gofyn am gyfeiriadau ar gyfer eu gwaith, bydd Model Iaith Mawr yn cynhyrchu pethau sy'n edrych fel cyfeiriadau gan ddefnyddio patrymau mae wedi eu dysgu - yn aml lle nad ydyn nhw'n bodoli go iawn.
Mae modelau AI yn cael eu hyfforddi gyda chyfansymiau enfawr o destun ar-lein. Mae'r testun hwnnw'n cynnwys gwybodaeth o ansawdd uchel, ond mae deunydd sydd wedi dyddio, deunydd anghywir neu ddeunydd rhagfarnllyd yn cael ei gasglu ogystal. Dydy'r model ddim yn gallu dweud y gwahaniaeth oni bai ei fod wedi'i hyfforddi'n benodol.
Mae hyn yn golygu bod y sylfaen hyfforddi ar gyfer system sy'n cael ei defnyddio i'n helpu ni gyda gwaith ymchwil, canfod ffeithiau a chyflenwi atebion yn cynnwys gwybodaeth ddiffygiol. Gallai hyn arwain at Fodelau Iaith Mawr presennol yn rhoi rhagor o ddeunydd gwallus a chamwybodaeth ar-lein - a hynny'n golygu bod modelau'r dyfodol yn hyfforddi drwy astudio gwybodaeth fwy diffygiol fyth. Byddai hyn yn arwain at ergyd bellach i ddibynadwyedd y rhyngrwyd ond hefyd i fersiynau cymorth wedi'u pweru gan AI yn y dyfodol.
Mae creu a rhedeg systemau AI mawr yn gofyn am galedwedd arbenigol, ac mae'r galw am y cydrannau hyn wedi cynyddu'n gyflym.
Mae'r gofynion caledwedd i fodloni anghenion storio gwybodaeth y canolfannau data, sy'n cael eu defnyddio i hyfforddi'r systemau hyn a phopeth maen nhw'n ei gasglu gan eu defnyddwyr, yn enfawr. Mae'r Unol Daleithiau yn unig wedi cyhoeddi agoriad cant o ganolfannau storio data enfawr newydd.
Mae rhai o ganlyniadau hynny eisoes wedi dod i'r amlwg, gan gynnwys cynnydd sydyn ym mhrisiau dyfeisiau prosesu a storio ar gyfer cyfrifiaduron, a gostyngiad o ran eu hargaeledd. Un o'r sgil effeithiau yw oedi datblygiad ym mhob agwedd arall ar ddatblygiadau technolegol - yn enwedig mewn lleoliadau domestig. Un o'r enghreifftiau enwocaf ar hyn o bryd yw oedi cyflwyno cyfrifiadur newydd o'r enw Steam Machine, ac o bosib dileu'r prosiect yn llwyr, oherwydd yr anallu i gael gafael ar y cyfarpar angenrheidiol a chadw costau i lawr i brynwyr.
Mynegwyd llawer o bryder ynghylch y defnydd o ddeunydd wedi'i ddiogelu gan hawlfraint, heb unrhyw fath o gydnabyddiaeth, ar gyfer hyfforddi a datblygu Modelau Iaith Mawr.
Mae hawlfraint yn bodoli i ddiogelu cynnwys awdur/crëwr ac i sicrhau nad oes neb arall yn elwa ohono.
Mae anwybyddu hyn yn golygu bod systemau AI yn ailddefnyddio cynnwys ar gost i'r awdur/crëwr gwreiddiol, sy'n codi cwestiynau moesegol a chyfreithiol am berchnogaeth a defnydd teg.
Mae cwmnïau/sefydliadau yn gwneud mwy o ddefnydd o Fodelau Iaith Mawr i helpu gydag arbed costau ac effeithiolrwydd amser. Er enghraifft, mae system sgwrsio â chwsmeriaid ar-lein wedi'i bweru gan AI yn ymateb yn llawer cyflymach i ymholiadau na gweithredwr dynol.
Fodd bynnag, po fwyaf rydyn ni'n disodli'r elfen ddynol mewn gwasanaethau cwsmeriaid a gwasanaethau eraill fel cyngor/darpariaeth iechyd, y mwyaf ynysig ac unig y mae pobl yn mynd - yn enwedig yr unigolion mwyaf bregus.
Mae pryder hefyd bod disgwyl i bawb allu rhyngweithio gyda thechnoleg o'r fath yn gwneud mwy fyth o'r boblogaeth yn agored i niwed.
Fyddech chi'n gallu mynd am ddiwrnod heb ofyn rhywbeth i Google (sydd bellach yn ymgorffori ei gymorth AI ei hun) neu unrhyw Fodel Iaith Mawr?
Mae dod yn orddibynnol ar unrhyw dechnoleg yn broblem. Byddai'n rhoi cyfle i'r cwmnïau sy'n cynnig y gwasanaethau hyn wasgu defnyddwyr drwy gynyddu costau'r agweddau mwyaf poblogaidd. Byddai pobl yn talu oherwydd nad ydyn nhw'n gallu 'byw' hebddyn nhw mwyach. Mae pryder arall hefyd: pe bai rhywbeth yn digwydd i'r gwasanaeth hwnnw, pa mor gyflym fyddai pobl yn gallu addasu pan nad ydyn nhw wedi datblygu'r sgiliau angenrheidiol i wneud tasg heb gymorth Model Iaith Mawr?
Defnyddiwch AI i ddysgu, nid i ddisodli dysgu
Mae AI yn gallu bod yn adnodd defnyddiol, ond dim ond os ydych chi'n ei ddefnyddio mewn ffordd sy'n cefnogi eich meddyliau eich hun. Dyma ganllawiau syml i'ch helpu i gael y buddion heb golli'r cyfle i feithrin eich sgiliau.
Dechreuwch gyda'ch syniadau eich hun
Cyn agor adnodd AI, treuliwch ychydig o amser yn ystyried y dasg eich hun. Beth ydych chi'n ei wybod yn barod? Beth ydych chi'n ceisio'i ddeall? Mae hyd yn oed taflu syniadau yn sydyn yn help i chi gadw rheolaeth ar y dysgu.Defnyddiwch AI i archwilio, nid i gopïo
Gofynnwch i AI esbonio cysyniad, cynnig enghreifftiau neu eich helpu i weld problem o safbwynt gwahanol. Peidiwch â chopio'r ateb a'i ludo yn eich gwaith eich hun a'i gadael hi ar hynny - defnyddiwch yr ateb i ddyfnhau eich dealltwriaeth.Gwiriwch bopeth
Mae AI yn gallu swnio'n hyderus a chredadwy hyd yn oed pan mae'n anghywir. Mae'n hollbwysig ailwirio ffeithiau gyda ffynonellau dibynadwy bob amser, yn enwedig ar gyfer gwyddoniaeth, hanes ac unrhyw beth sy'n gofyn am gywirdeb manwl.Cadwch eich gwybodaeth bersonol yn ddiogel
Peidiwch byth â rhannu eich enw llawn, cyfeiriad, ysgol neu unrhyw wybodaeth sensitif gydag adnodd AI. Mae angen ei drin fel gofod cyhoeddus.Gwnewch y siŵr mai eich gwaith chi eich hun yw'r gwaith terfynol
Defnyddiwch AI fel man cychwyn, nid i greu cynnyrch gorffenedig. Rhowch bethau yn eich geiriau eich hun, ychwanegwch eich enghreifftiau eich hun a dangoswch eich gwaith meddwl eich hun. Dyna sut rydych chi'n dysgu go iawn.Mae adnoddau AI yn effeithio ar fwy na dim ond eich gwaith cartref - maen nhw'n effeithio ar y byd o'ch cwmpas. Pan fyddwch chi'n defnyddio Model Iaith Mawr, rydych chi hefyd yn defnyddio ynni, data a phŵer cyfrifiadurol. Mae'n bwysig deall yr effaith ehangach er mwyn i chi allu gwneud dewisiadau gwybodus.
Mae'n bwysig cofio nad Modelau Iaith Mawr yw'r rhan fwyaf o systemau AI - yn wir, mae llawer ohonyn nhw'n llawer mwy effeithlon ac arbenigol.
Mae yna nifer fawr o wahanol ddulliau a defnyddiau i AI heblaw Modelau Iaith Mawr, ac mae rhai wedi'u rhestru isod.
Mae'r holl ddefnyddiau amgen hyn o AI yn defnyddio llawer llai o ynni, gofod storio a chof. Mae hyn oherwydd eu bod nhw angen setiau data hyfforddi llawer llai ac am eu bod nhw'n cyflawni tasgau penodol iawn - boed hynny'n canfod tiwmorau mewn sganiau meddygol neu'n argymell cyfresi a rhaglenni i chi o arlwy gwasanaeth ffrydio.
Mae'r systemau arbenigol hyn yn rhatach, yn fwy ecogyfeillgar ac yn esgor ar wybodaeth fwy cywir sy'n cael effaith gadarnhaol ar fywydau pawb. Ac eto, mae'r pryderon ynghlwm wrth Fodelau Iaith Mawr a'r cyfeiriad cyson mai dyna yw AI yn bwrw cysgod dros y systemau arloesol hyn. O ganlyniad, mae llawer o ymchwilwyr wedi mabwysiadu term newydd, 'dysgu peirianyddol', ar gyfer dulliau AI ar wahân i Fodelau Iaith Mawr er mwyn osgoi'r sylw negyddol sydd ynghlwm wrthyn nhw.
Rydyn ni eisoes wedi cyfeirio at rai o'r systemau a'r defnyddiau ar gyfer y dulliau dysgu peirianyddol hyn. Bydd yr adran hon yn edrych yn fanylach ar rai ohonyn nhw, a'u heffaith.
Mae system AlphaFold, DeepMind, yn gallu rhagweld siâp 3D proteinau o'u dilyniant asid amino. Roedd hwn yn ddatblygiad gwyddonol enfawr oherwydd bod siapiau protein yn allweddol er mwyn deall clefydau a datblygu meddyginiaethau newydd.
Pam mae'n bwysig: Roedd yn datrys problem yr oedd biolegwyr wedi bod yn gweithio arni ers 50 mlynedd.
Mae cwmnïau fel Tesla, Waymo ac eraill yn defnyddio dysgu peirianyddol i helpu ceir: sylwi ar gerddwyr, darllen arwyddion ffordd, rhagweld symudiadau cerbydau eraill a chynllunio llwybrau diogel.
Pam mae'n bwysig: Mae'n ddefnydd byd go iawn o olwg a phrosesau gwneud penderfyniadau cyfrifiaduron i wneud teithio ar y ffordd yn fwy diogel i bawb.
Mae amryw o fodelau AI wedi cael eu hyfforddi i ddadansoddi gwahanol ddelweddau meddygol i adnabod pethau fel tiwmorau, clefydau neu dorasgwrn.
Pam mae'n bwysig: Mae'n helpu meddygon i wneud diagnosis a thrin salwch yn gyflymach ac yn fwy cywir.
Defnyddio dysgu peirianyddol wedi'i hyfforddi ar ddelweddau drôn o dwf cnydau a thir amaethyddol i helpu i adnabod cnydau afiach, optimeiddio dyfrio a lleihau'r defnydd o blaladdwyr.
Pam mae'n bwysig: Mae'n cefnogi ffermio cynaliadwy ac yn gwella diogeledd bwyd rhyngwladol.
Mae cymaint mwy o enghreifftiau a defnyddiau sy'n haeddu eu crybwyll, ond rydyn ni'n credu ei bod hi'n bwysig cydnabod y cynnydd sylweddol ym mhob maes pwnc ers cyflwyno'r systemau hyn. Mae hyd yn oed y defnydd symlaf o rai modelau AI gyda setiau data wedi cynyddu cyflymder prosesu a chanfod patrymau.
Yn 2024, enillwyd dwy o'r Gwobrau Nobel gan grewyr a defnyddiau adnoddau dysgu peirianyddol/AI.
Enillwyd Gwobr Ffiseg Nobel gan ddau raglennydd am ddatblygu rhwydweithiau niwral artiffisial sy'n caniatáu i gyfrifiaduron storio, ailadeiladu a dod o hyd yn annibynnol i briodweddau mewn data.
AlphaFold, prosiect DeepMind a gafodd sylw yn yr adran flaenorol, oedd enillydd Gwobr Cemeg Nobel, a hynny am ddatrys problem plygu protein 50 cant oed, gan ragweld strwythurau ar gyfer bron pob un o'r 200 miliwn o broteinau hysbys.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that can learn from data and use that learning to make decisions, predictions, or classifications. Instead of following a fixed set of instructions, AI systems look for patterns and adjust their behaviour based on what they've seen before.
You already use AI every day, often without noticing. Examples include:
These systems aren't "thinking" like humans - they're using large amounts of data to make educated guesses.
It's also important to remember that AI is a broad field. Chatbots like ChatGPT are just one type of AI. Many AI systems don't generate text at all; they classify images, detect fraud, translate languages, or help doctors analyse scans.
Because chatbots (LLMs) are the most visible form of AI now, many people assume that AI and LLMs are the same thing - but LLMs are just one type of AI.
Large Language Models (LLMs) are programs designed to mimic human language so they can interact with people in a natural, conversational way. They are an evolution of earlier chatbots, leading to systems such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and Grok.
LLMs work by analysing patterns in huge amounts of text. During training, they are shown billions of examples of sentences, conversations, articles, and books - most of it collected from the internet. From this, they learn statistical patterns: which words tend to appear together, how sentences are structured, and how ideas are usually expressed.
It should be noted that LLMs do not store these sources of training but learns patterns from them.
Modern LLMs use a type of neural network called a transformer architecture, which allows them to process text efficiently and generate responses that feel coherent and context aware.
As LLMs do not understand meaning, they can produce confident-sounding answers that are wrong.
It is important to note that LLMs do not "understand" language in the same way humans do. They do not have beliefs, opinions, or awareness - they simply predict the most likely next word based on the patterns they have learned.
They work like playing an endless game of 'guess the next word' based on everything it has seen before.
One concern with using AI for schoolwork is that it can become tempting to let the tool do the thinking for you. If you rely on an AI to write your essays, solve your problems, or explain every idea, you miss out on practising the skills you need to develop - like structuring arguments, analysing information, or working through a tricky question yourself.
Over time, this can make it harder to learn independently. You might get the right answer in the moment, but you lose the chance to build confidence in your own abilities.
AI can be a useful support, but it shouldn't replace the process of learning. The goal is to use it to help you think, not to think instead of you.
Let's look at some options for how LLMs may be used to assist with a homework assignment.

Climate impact is a major concern for both users and developers. As people become more aware of their carbon footprint and water usage, questions are being raised about the environmental cost of running large AI systems.
We spent some time trying to find reliable figures for CO2 emissions and water consumption associated with AI. There are many different estimates available, and they vary widely depending on the source, the model, and the assumptions used. This makes it difficult to know which numbers to trust.
ChatGPT and its CEO, Sam Altman, have published figures for their system, and we have chosen to use these. Although these values are likely to be conservative and minimise the environmental cost, they still allow us to understand the scale of the impact. Even with these lower-bound estimates, the results are striking.
Based on the published data, the daily CO2 emissions from ChatGPT are around 255,000 kg. Offsetting this would require more than four million trees. The system also consumes approximately 241,320 litres of water per day.
These calculations use average values. The exact environmental cost depends on the complexity of the user requests: short text queries use less energy and water, while tasks such as image generation require significantly more.
These figures only reflect the daily running costs of an already-trained model. They do not include the environmental impact of developing the system in the first place. Training a large AI model requires enormous amounts of computing power, which means far higher energy use, greater water consumption, and significant hardware demands. The development phase is usually far more climate-intensive than day-to-day usage, but because companies rarely publish full training data, the true cost is difficult to measure
It should also be recognised that the data used in this session is very time specific (2025/26) and that there are hopes that as the technology evolves such costs will be reduced over time.
Every time you use an AI chatbot, you're tapping into a building full of powerful computers running 24/7. That uses energy and water, just like streaming videos or gaming online. Knowing this helps you decide when AI is worth using - and when it's better to think something through yourself.
AI systems can be useful, but they also come with risks that are important to understand. These issues don't mean you should avoid AI completely - they just mean you need to use it thoughtfully.
Fake news, image, and video production has become more prevalent with these systems able to generate them for anyone. The overall effect being that we really cannot trust anything we read, see, or hear online.
This massive uptake of 'AI Slop' has flooded social media platforms with content walls filled with fictional/fake posts - which is both annoying and misleading.
Some AI tools store the prompts you type into them. Depending on the platform, this information may be used to improve the model or reviewed by humans. It's important not to share personal, sensitive, or identifying information with any AI system.
AI models can sometimes produce harmful, offensive, or inappropriate outputs, even when you don't ask for them. Companies use filters to reduce this, but they aren't perfect.
LLMs can produce answers that sound confident but are completely wrong. They don't "know" facts - they predict text based on patterns.
When a user requests references for their work, an LLM will produce things that look like references using patterns learned - often none really exist.
AI models are trained on huge amounts of text from the internet. This includes high-quality information, but also outdated, inaccurate, or biased material. The model can't tell the difference unless it has been specifically trained to.
This means the training base for a system we use to help us with research, fact-finding, and giving us answers contains flawed information. This could lead to our current LLMs bloating the internet with further inaccuracies and misinformation - so future versions will be training on even more flawed information. This would lead to even more of a drop in the reliability of the internet but also future iterations of our AI powered assistants.
Building and running large AI systems requires specialised hardware, and demand for these components has increased rapidly.
The hardware demands for the necessary data centres to store all the information used to train these systems and everything they are collecting from their users is massive. The US alone has announced the opening of a hundred new massive data storage centres.
One of the already felt impacts of this is the sudden increase in price and decrease in availability of processing and storage devices for computers. Delaying development in all other avenues of technological development - especially in domestic settings. One of the most famous examples at this time is the delay and possible scrapping of a new computer called the Steam Machine due to the inability to obtain the necessary parts and keep the costs down for the buyers.
There have been many concerns raised regarding LLMs lack of concern for using copyright protected material in its training and development.
Copyright exists to protect the content of an author/creator and to ensure no-one else profits from it.
Ignoring this means that AI systems are re-using content at the cost to the original author/creator which raises ethical and legal questions about ownership and fair use.
Companies/institutions are making more use of LLMs to help with cost-saving and time effectiveness. For example, an online AI powered customer chat system is much faster at responding to queries than a human operator.
However, the more we replace the human element in customer services and other services such as health advice/provision, the more isolated and lonely people become - especially our most vulnerable.
There is also the concern that the expectation of everyone to be able to operate with such technology leaves more of our population vulnerable.
Could you go a day without asking Google (which now incorporates its own AI assist) or any LLM something?
Becoming overly reliant on any technology is problematic. It would provide the companies offering these services an opportunity to extort its users by raising the costs of the most popular aspects. People would pay because they can no longer 'live' without it. The other issue is that if something were to happen to that service, how quickly would people be able to adjust having not developed the skills necessary to do a task without the assistance of an LLM?
Use AI to learn, not to replace learning
AI can be a helpful tool, but only if you use it in a way that supports your own thinking. Here are some simple guidelines to help you get the benefits without losing the chance to build your skills.
Start with your own ideas
Before you open an AI tool, take a moment to think about the task yourself. What do you already know? What are you trying to understand? Even a quick brainstorm helps you stay in control of the learning.Use AI to explore, not to copy
Ask AI to explain a concept, give examples, or help you see a problem from a different angle. Don't just paste the answer into your work - use it to deepen your understanding.Check everything
AI can sound confident even when it's wrong. Always cross-check facts with reliable sources, especially for science, history, and anything that needs accuracy.Keep your personal information safe
Never share your full name, address, school, or anything sensitive with an AI tool. Treat it like a public space.Make the final work your own
Use AI as a starting point, not the finished product. Put things into your own words, add your own examples, and show your own thinking. That's how you actually learn.AI tools don't just affect your homework - they affect the world around you. When you use an LLM, you're also using energy, data, and computing power. It's important to understand the wider impact so you can make informed choices.
It's important to remember that most AI systems are not LLMs - and many of them are far more efficient and specialised.
There are a large number of different AI approaches and uses other than LLMs, some of which are listed below.
All these alternative uses of AI are much less energy, storage, and memory consuming. This is due to requiring much smaller training datasets and having very specific tasks - whether that's detecting tumours in medical scans or giving you tv-show recommendations within a streaming service.
These specialised systems are cheaper, more environmentally friendly, and have a higher accuracy which allows for positive impact on everyone's lives. Yet, the issues surrounding LLMs and their constant reference to being AI overshadows these ground-breaking systems. As a result, many researchers have adopted a new term of 'machine learning' for AI approaches which are not LLMs to avoid the negative press associated.
We've already hinted above at some of the systems and applications for these machine learning approaches. This section will have a more in-depth look at some of these and their impact.
DeepMind's AlphaFold can predict the 3D shape of proteins from their amino-acid sequence. This was a massive scientific breakthrough because protein shapes are key to understanding diseases and developing new medicines.
Why it matters: It solved a problem biologists had been working on for 50 years.
Companies like Tesla, Waymo, and others use machine learning to help cars: detect pedestrians, read road signs, predict movements of other vehicles, and plan safe routes.
Why it matters: It's a real-world application of computer vision and decision-making to make road travel safer for everyone.
Various AI models have been trained to analyse different medical images to spot things like tumours, disease, or fractures.
Why it matters: It helps doctors diagnose and treat illnesses faster and more accurately.
Using machine learning trained on drone imagery of crop growth and agricultural land to help identify diseased crops, optimise irrigation, and reduce pesticide usage.
Why it matters: Supports sustainable farming and improves international food security.
There are so many more examples and applications we could here, but we believe it's important to recognise that since the introduction of these systems there have been a surge in breakthroughs in all subject areas. Even the simplest of applications of some AI models on datasets has increased our speed of processing and detecting patterns.
In 2024, two of the Nobel Prizes were both won by creators and applications of machine learning/AI tools.
Two programmers won the Nobel Prize for Physics with their development of artificial neural networks that allow computers to store, reconstruct, and autonomously find properties in data.
The DeepMind AlphaFold project mentioned in the previous section was the winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for solving a 50-year-old protein folding problem, predicting structures for almost all 200 million known proteins.
