Santa's Data Division was preparing the Annual Chocolate Logistics Report when a rogue snowflake corrupted key values. Graphs lost their labels, and vital stats in the spreadsheet have been replaced with error messages and random characters. Without this data:

• Reindeer fuel calculations are off.


• Elf snack quotas are misaligned.


• The sleigh's weight distribution is dangerously fudge-heavy.

Your mission: Become a Festive Data Analyst, restore the missing values, and help identify the graphs.

The Data

Below are a set of tables with all the core data still present. This is all real-world data collected from 550g chocolate selection tubs.

The columns should contain the following data in order (left to right).

• Flavour of chocolate
• Number of that flavour in the box
• The percentage of that flavour in the box (by number)
• The mass (in grams) of one chocolate of that flavour (with wrapper)
• The mass (in grams) of another chocolate of that flavour (with wrapper)
• The mass (in grams) of another chocolate of that flavour (with wrapper)
• The mean average mass (in grams) of that chocolate flavour (with wrapper)
• The mass (in grams) of the wrapper for that flavour
• The mass (in grams) of that flavour without a wrapper
• Total mass (in grams) of that flavour in the selection
• Percentage of the total mass in the selection
• The average number of calories per 100g - as taken from the nutritional information on the selection boxes.
• The calories per chocolate of this flavour.

The Calculations

This section will provide some guides for how to calculate mean averages and percentages to complete the data tables.

Percentages

To calculate percentage values, we use the equation:

\( \frac{a}{b} \times 100 \)

The letter a is the amount you're interested in, whilst letter b is the total amount.

Let's look at how to calculate the percentage of the Roses selection made up by Tangy Orange Crèmes.

1. There are 6 of this flavour in the box - so this is the number we replace the letter a within the equation.


2. We then need to work out the total number of chocolates in the Roses Selection box by adding together the amounts of each flavour:

4. This is the value we shall replace the letter b with.


5. So, the percentage of the selection made up by the Tangy Orange Crèmes is:

   \( \frac{6}{52} \times 100 \) = 11.5% (to one decimal place)

Mean Average

This involves adding together a group of numbers and dividing it by how many numbers were in the group.

For this activity, we've asked you to calculate the mean average of the mass of each flavour with its wrapper.

The elves have weighed three different chocolates of the same flavour from each box, we need to work out the mean average.

1. Let's start by looking at the Tangy Orange Crème from the Roses selection.


2. The mass measurements are 12.1g, 12.3g, and 11.9g


3. We need to add these together:


4. 12.1 + 12.3 + 11.9 = 36.3


5. As there are three measurements, we need to take this total and divide it by three.


6. 36.3 ÷ 3 = 12.1


7. So, the mean average mass of a Tangy Orange Crème with its wrapper, is 12.1g

More Possibilities

We hope you enjoyed this activity.

Here are a few ideas for how to expand it.

• How about adding a column for flavour ratings (1-5 with one being yuk! and 5 being super yummy)? Perhaps you could add a rating column for each family member - then you could calculate the average rating for each flavour and therefore the whole selection. A mathematical way to prove which selection box is best for everyone at Christmas time in your home.


• If you are fortunate to have access to a selection box, how about collecting your own raw data and processing it?


• Further analysis of the data could include looking at how much variation in mass there is, the difference between percentage of the selection and percentage of the mass, and/or accuracy of mass contained compared to the weight listed on the box.
